UNI Takes 5th at Natl. Duals Regional
The UNI wrestling team dropped their opener at their regional section of the National Dual tournament in Ames yesterday, but did bounce back to defeat Wisconsin to take 5th place. Virginia Tech edged the Panthers 20-17 in the first dual of the day, although the teams split the five bouts. But three of those Virginia Tech wins were bonus point victories, pushing them to the team victory. Against Wisconsin, UNI won each of the first five matches, jumping out to a 24-0 lead. Wisconsin would win four of the remaining five bouts, with the exception being Ryan Loder’s win by fall at 184 pounds. That pushed the team score to a 30-9 advantage for UNI, essentially sealing the victory. 133 pounder Joe Colon was one of UNI’s top performers. He upset Virginia Tech’s top-ranked Devin Carter, then pinned Wisconsin’s Shane McQuade to earn his 15th consecutive win. 14 of those victories have been bonus point wins. The Panthers’ final dual meet is this Sunday at Nebraska. After that the Panthers will set their sights on the NCAA’s West Regional meet on March 4th. That event will be held at the McLeod Center.
