Area Teams Fare Well on Day 1 of State Wrestling
The first day of the State Wrestling Tournament is in the books, and it was pretty good day for teams in the Cedar Valley. In Class 3A, Cedar Falls has all four of their wrestlers still alive, with three of them in the quarterfinals. That includes heavyweight Nick Terpstra, who upset top-ranked Tyler Burrell of Cedar Rapids Washington in overtime. Waverly-Shell Rock moved four of their eight qualifiers on to the quarterfinals, with another three wrestlers still alive in the consolation bracket.
In Class 2A, Denver-Tripoli sits in third place in the team standings after the Titans went six-for-six in the first round, sending all of their qualifiers on to the quarterfinals. Three of Union’s wrestlers are also on to the quarterfinals, with one other wrestler still alive in the consolation.
In Class 1A, Don Bosco is just a point and a half off of the team lead after the Dons have six wrestlers move on to the quarterfinal round. Also in to the quarterfinals in 1A are Waterloo Columbus’ Charlie Jones, Hudson’s Ben Huber, Jesup’s Ryan Hall and the Aplington-Parkersburg duo of Alex Cutshall and Brandon McCracken. Dike-New Hartford’s Terry Moody is still alive in the consolation bracket. Our State Wrestling coverage resumes this morning at 9:00 with quarterfinal matches in Classes 3A and 2A.
