Day One Review of State HS Wrestling Tournament
Day one of the 2014 State High School Wrestling Tournament from Des Moines is complete. 33 of the nearly 50 Cedar Valley wrestlers move on to today’s action.
In Class 1-A, Don Bosco will have one in the second round, plus five others moving through the consolation bracket. Dike-New Hartford will have one move on in the second round. Aplington-Parkersburg has two in today’s second round; Hudson has one in the second round and one in the consolation bracket. Jesup’s two qualifiers will continue on today in the consolation bracket, and Wapsie will also have two qualifiers move through the consolation round. Alburnett leads Class 1-A team scoring with 31 points, followed by Wilton with 23 and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont with 23. Don Bosco is in fifth place with 14 points.
In Class 2-A, Independence will have three wrestlers in today’s second round, and Union will have three in the second round with two in the consolation bracket. Davenport Assumption leads the team scoring in Class 2-A with 25 points, Mediapolis is second with 20-and a half points and Union third with 18.
In Class 3-A, Cedar Falls’ Daniel Kelly will be the only Tiger in the second round, the other two qualifiers lost in consolation. Both of Waterloo East’s wrestlers lost in the consolation round last night, so no Trojans will be continuing on in this year’s tournament. Both of Waterloo West’s qualifiers, Marcus Harrington and Kyler Matthews will be in today’s second round, and Waverly-Shell Rock advances six in the second round, and four in the consolation bracket. Bettendorf leads Class 3-A with 31 points, Southeast Polk was second with 29-and a half points, Waverly-Shell Rock was third with 27-and a half-points.
