Scherff Helping Mentor Boettger

Former Cedar Falls football player Ike Boettger says hes still learning his new position, but he has a good mentor. Boettger was moved to offensive line last season and is currently listed as the back-up at left tackle for the Iowa Hawkeyes. The player ahead of him on the depth chart is returning All-Big Ten pick Brandon Scherff, back for his senior season. The two players roomed together this summer, and Boettger says hes already learned much from the senior.

Scherff says he was looking to set a strong example for Boettger.

Scherff says that some of the lessons he tried to impart to Boettger were the same ones he had to learn as a younger player.

While most back-ups might have their eyes on possible playing time, Boettger says hes simply trying to pick up as much as he can from Scherff, who is projected to be a first round NFL Draft pick.

Iowa has four starters returning to the offensive line this fall, but things get thin behind that. The back-ups at four of the five line spots are either sophomores or redshirt freshmen. Scherff says that the younger players need to be ready if they are called on to play.

Iowa hosts UNI to open the season on August 30.
